How to Make The Jeep Engines Waterproof?

How to make a waterproof engine is a common query for Jeep lovers. Since they love to drive their off-road vehicle on water and mud, the Jeeps are designed to ride comfortably in watery places without facing any significant issues. That’s why the manufacturers make the engine electric parts water-resistant.

They can resist water, but they are not waterproof. Water can go through the engine and cut it. That’s why you need tools and gadgets to turn a regular jeep engine into a waterproof one.

Required Tools to Waterproof The Engine

Before going through the steps, you must have tools and gadgets to waterproof the engine. Only then you can drive the car & jeep on water and mud and go through deep water.

The required tools & gadgets are:

  • Waterproofing Electrical Kits
  • Exhaust Fording Kits
  • RTV Silicone
  • All Terrain Tires
  • Snorkels

Before waterproofing the Jeep engine, you should also know about other engine problems. Especially the Jeep JL engine problems must be sorted out before installing those gadgets.

5 Steps to Make The Jeep Engine Waterproof

Finally, the most desired part is here. You can make a waterproof engine using those required tools and gadgets in 5 steps. So, get all those required tools and follow the steps accordingly.

Step 1: Install Waterproof Electrical Kits

First thing first, you must consider waterproofing the electric parts. For that, you need the below things.

  • Harness to waterproof Ignition Switches
  • Waterproof fan case
  • Power Distribution case

These three are the best electrical gadgets you can buy to waterproof the engine. Remember, the electrical department will most likely get the water and disconnect the engine.

First, cover the ignition switch with the harness. Then install the waterproof fan case to protect the engine fan and don’t allow the water to get through the fan. Then, you should use a power distribution case to protect the battery and other electric wires from getting water.

Step 2: Modify The Exhaust

The second most crucial engine part is the exhaust manifold. If you cross the water and go deep, the water might enter the exhaust. It will shut down the engine within a while, though it’s supposed to be water-resistant.

To avoid such incidents, you need to install the exhaust fording kits. It’ll protect the exhaust and won’t allow the water to enter or disconnect the engine. You can also modify the exhaust manifold from the garage to get a permanent waterproof engine.

Step 3: Seal The Caps

When you cross the engine, the water goes through the engine and enters into the caps. Fuel caps, intake air filter caps, and other caps protect different parts of the engine. Although they are water-resistant, they can’t avoid water.

In that case, you must use the RTV silicone around the caps. This silicone is supposed to waterproof all the caps and not allow water to enter these parts and damage the engine. You can cross the deep water without any further thinking.

Step 4: Change/Replace Tires

The above three steps are enough to make a waterproof engine, but you should follow this step and the next one to get a 100% waterproof engine and drive in any watery place without any issues.

The first thing is to change the existing tires. Most old model Jeep comes with a couple of regular tires, which are unsupportive in slippery or watery places.

Therefore, replacing existing tires with all-terrain tires might be good. To get such a modification, you must look at the Jeep model. If it’s a 2015 or updated Jeep car, it’ll allow you to get the all-terrain large tires. But the old model Jeep won’t have that space and specs.

Step 5: Use Snorkels

As a human being, the Jeep engine also needs a snorkel to become waterproof. You must let the engine take enough air to breadth underwater and produce more power to drive in the mud. That’s why the snorkel would be the last thing you’ll install in the engine.

What to Do If My Jeep Engine Gets Too Much Water?

If you’ve a regular Jeep engine that is water-resistant but not waterproof, you must be careful about the water. Especially. If you cross the water and the engine gets too much water, you must take care of it.

First, let the engine cool down and by itself. If the engine is updated, it’ll have enough power, and all the parts will get rid of the water soon. You must get a dry engine within an hour or so.

If the water enters the engine parts and intakes the air filter, it might be turned off. You should remove the hood cover and get through all the caps and engine parts. Sometimes, it’d be challenging to get rid of the excess water. That time, you need to go to a garage and get professional help.

Apart from the water, the Jeep engine might be shut off while driving for other reasons. I’ve discussed all the factors that cause the Jeep engine shuts off while driving here.
